Excelsior was a rare opportunity to have some fun with a true colonial British design in central Yangon, Myanmar.
During the British rule, Yangon was a major financial, political and administrative centre. The country was also a major exporter of oil, cotton, rice and timber. Many foreign businesses such as the Steel Brothers opened their offices in the city. Buildings were built to the best design and standard available at the time to show the never-fading glory of the Empire where the sun never sets. Many colonial-era buildings that survived the Second World War remain in the faint shadow of a glorious past.
We produced a stunning set of amenities and worked with the owners on many aspects of the property’s identity and marketing collaterals. Its visual identity was inspired by the machinery and print processes used not just during this era but within this very building. The texture and monochrome visuals celebrate simplicity and tactility. Designed as a business hotel, the tone-of-voice is formal but direct.
